I have decided that i must replace my mufflers. I removed the plates from the side pipes but  otherwise my exhaust is completely stock, For me it is more an issue with look then sound .The car sounds good now, though a little on the quite side. But I hate how  the giant mufflers are visible  hanging below the valance.  So appearance is my main issue  but I don't want the car to sound like crap eithier. With the look I want and what I am willing to spend, I have narrowed it down to  Flowmaster Outlaws, SLP Loudmouths, and Pypebombs. I had Pypebombs on my 2010 GT and they sounded great but the 3Vs have a very different sound then our cars so that is a concern, and they took a lot of massaging to get them to sit right so I have fitment concerns with them also.. So unless some one here has them and can tell me they sound amazing I have pretty much eliminated them from the running. But I would really appreciate feedback from  about the three axlebacks I mentioned, or any other suggestions. I prefer a deep aggressive tone and  volume and drone is not an issue for me.No such thing as too loud.

Thanks.

I totally agree with your aesthetic repulsion for Ford's Boss 302 stock mufflers... Mine stayed less than 6 months on the car. They are now nicely stored away should they become "important" in a distant future... Lol

IMG_0510_zps5d08f4de.jpg

I replaced them with Flowmasters Force II. Not overly loud, but still very decent, smaller, lighter, much better looks (kinda "blacked out" under the valence), and most of all, providing an incredible sound when the car goes into lopey idle with the Track Key... Best mod on my car!

I also blacked out my cans because I found the look of the stock one's unsightly from the rear. I went with Borla ATAKs and used a high heat flat black paint on them. Just left those gorgeous chrome tips showing from behind.

Problem with exhaust is you get used to the sound and want more unitl more is too much.

I went with Roush and was happy for several years until the more set in. I then went cat delete. The HP you gain is GREAT! The sound you pick up to is like going to a 80's metal concert.

Yes I loved it. Well as time rolled by and the exhaust note became less important, as I always wonder if I'm pissing off neighbors or our law enforcement servants. I have a completely different view on exhaust.

Go with mufflers that don't wake the dead. Yes at first they sound like what you have been missing. But trust me that it's been missing for a reason.

Do not remove the cats unless you only want Horse power and not sound and can get away with it at 5am in the morning. Or if you don't mind swapping these things in and out for different reasons. That's where I thru in the towel.

I have Roush axel backs and cat delete and no longer think its sounds great. I guess its like an exhaust junkie. You always want more until you overwhelm your body with the addiction.

I need to enter an exhaust addiction rehab clinic.

Best advise, just go with a nice set of axel backs that our members recommend. If you remove the cats because you want more sound.... You then must realize that you do have an exhaust sound addiction.  And seek help at once. You can not do it alone!!!! That power and response will keep calling you until Johnny Lawman calls you more or your head starts to hurt after long drives.

Keep us posted as we hope to find the PERFECT exhaust package out there that everyone will say is #1 badass.

Good Luck My Friend

I run a MagnaFlow system with street AB's.

The AB's are polished stainless and are much smaller than the OEM's so they tuck up out of view under the rear valance. MagnaFlow Distributors also have sales events.

And Black Friday is upon us! There are just so many AB choices for our cars that it makes it tough to decide.

Good luck with your search,

Buland I would love to go  to go with the GT500 style quads but with a 2012 its not really an option since no one makes a 10-12 rear valence to accommodate them. The best I can do is buy a GT rear valance and cut it, which doesn't appeal to me. I am almost sorry I didn't buy a '13 for that reason alone.

Ginger my Mustang is not my daily driver so It rarelyl gets started early in the morning so  annoying the neighbors is not as  much a concern as it had been for me in the past. There is an early Sunday Morning meet year round weather permitting but there are a large number of Muscle Cars and Modern performance cars in my neighborhood so Sunday mornings around here are pretty loud, At this point I have no plans to remove the cats, but that could change,

302 Hi Po I was just looking at the  Magnaflow Race AB and I am starting to lean towards them.

Thanks again everyone.

Hi Boss1145

I have the Magnaflow Axleback and my Sidepipes are open. Sound is good and like a Old School V8. With the Magnaflow you don't hear much difference with open or closed Sidepipes. The Sidepipes just make some more Noise if the Trackey is activated. First what i thought after the installation was that it is to loud, they are much louder than my Challenger with the Zoomers Catback and this Car has a loud noisy sound too. But now i am thinking about to get the Car louder in the next season ;-) Its like Ginger said: After a while you want always getting louder and louder. I hope i don't get trouble someday with my Cars :-(

@Boss1145

Sorry i didn't notice that's yours a 2012 Boss. My GHIG came with a Magnaflow competition from the first owner. this is a cat-back exhaust and this is very cool, but much to loud for our swiss police people. :-)

if i would live in the states i would install these exhaust.

I got a stock system as well and i just got the slp loudmouths. It still sounds nice and deep. But it may change one u get new h pipe and headers. Im saving money for kooks offroad h and kooks longtube headers and kooks side pipes. However there is a bit of drone in 6th gear going 60 mph up hills at EXACTLY 2k rpm. Hope this helped!

Has anyone ever tried or heard the stock mufflers with the cats removed.

I have Roush mufflers and cat delete. I am no longer happy with the sound but I do love the power gains with the cats being removed. I'm thinking about putting the cats back in and throwing in the towel. Just cant take the roar of the exhaust anymore. The extra ponies under the hood are fun, but are they really needed for a street car. Plus the fumes that the cat delete produce can be something to think about. But that's only when caught in traffic.

What to do what to do. I'm also reminded that putting the cats or stock mufflers back in cost no money.... What I can see happing is remove cat delete and mufflers and sell the axel backs. would love to install magnaflow AB. Have not checked yet. Do the make bolt in axel backs with out having to change OTA pipes. Also where's the best place to purchase.

I beleive a rear valance that works with GT 500 quad tip axle backs on a 2012 is on the market.

I may have to go this route.

Because...

Long tubes, catless X-pipe , no resonators, Bama tune, (w/GHOST idle), is what's in store for the WARHORSE.

I'm chomping at the bit!

(excited)

I have struck out trying to find one .If you do please let me know.

Anyway my decision has been made for me. My wife bought me Pypebombs for Christmas ( i'm not supposed to know, I got an email from AM thanking me for my order) Hopefully they sound as good on my car as they did on my '10. But they will correct the aesthetic issue which is the reason in changing the axkebacks in the first place

Chadster, I have heard the GT500 mufflers on a Boss with open side pipes, like you said they are not much louder but they  defiantly have a deeper tone I like how they sound on our cars, if sound was my only concern they would  be on my radar. I'm changing the Axlebacks because I don;t like how the car looks from behind with the stock mufflers hanging below the rear valance. The GT500s would have the same issue unfortunately.

My vendor has re-canted. He suggests trimming the '12 rear valance for quad tips.

My ON3GO muffler deletes look very similar to the pipe bombs my friend Whistler ('12 ,Boss),uses at Daytona motor speedway.

I have been REALLY happy with my present set up...xpipe,non resonated over axles. Sweet bliss.

But I'm gonna get crazy w/some killer headers.no cats,,a fighting dog soon to be unleashed.

I don't think cutting  the Boss302/GT500/CS panel on out cars would work.because of how it's shaped, I think you would have to get  a Mustang GT panel and cut that. I thought about  measuring the openings on the Roush square tip panel to see if it is big enough to accept the quads. The other the thought I had is to buy a '13/14 panel and cut out the corresponding section and epoxy  it in. But that sounds like a lot of expense and effort and probably beyond my skill and patience level,.

Just as an FYI, here's a picture of my Borla ATAKs with the black painted cans compared to the OEM exhaust on the left. You can barely see the cans on the right. If you're thinking like I did and didn't like the sight of those cans from behind, have them painted with a heat resistant paint and she'll look much cleaner.
