I finished the last performance mod to the boss yesterday(kooks). And finally decided to take and have her dynoed..Actually on two different dynos . One dynojet and the other dyno dynamics(nicknamed the heartbreaker dynos).  On the dyno jet the boss made great power 447rwhp and 392rwtq. ,on the dyno dynamics (load bearing) she made 435rwhp and 361rwtq. The dyno operator of the dynamics dyno said his numbers were close to 7-8 percent of a dyno jet. And after redynoing on a dyno jet those percentage numbers were pretty close.

Wow.

Assuming parasitic loss in the 10% - 15% range (lets split it a 12.5%) ...

And using the lesser value of 435 RWHP ...

That equates to ~497 BHP.

Pretty impressive with bolt-ons and a tune.

Thanks Bossy. I would have never gotten a tune, if i had the trackey reflash .I got the red key but no program with my car :(.. But im happy with it.. She still averages 23mpg on the highway also..So i think the package is working.. Last mod coming is installing my rst clutch and flywheel setup..But im waiting on it till i get the money to have the trans internals worked on..

Your header install write up helped on my install. Thanks. Only difference is, i did it with the kmember in the car amd reused the stock studs and nuts so i have less chance of things coming loose.. Since, i have access to lifts and i have just about every tool you can want(auto technician by trade).

To add one other note. The only cool down the car had was while it was being put on the rollers. And it was 1 1/2 hrs to the dynos. So im sure with some cooling down it would hit 450rwhp.

GHIGBoss302,

Glad to hear the header install writeup was helpful.

I must say I'm impressed that you were able to install the headers without dropping the K - lift or not.

Must be quite a set of tools.

I would. But that's me. I use as much of the OEM stuff as I can. Bc I don't like having issues down the road.

On the Kooks Super Street header, you can't use the OEM head studs. It doesn't fit across the bottom as the studs hit the tubes.

Kooks also includes an excellent set of fasteners with their headers. No rust on header bolts after 18 months plus on car.

Actually 2hp. That's incorrect. I reused all of my factory studs and nuts. I just installed my kooks street headers on sunday. Maybe on the early versions but my set fit perfect with the OEM studs and nuts.

I wasn't worried about the rusting ,my concern is them backing off. Because the kooks bolts have no retainers or lock washers to hold them in place.

My Kooks L T 's came with two sets of fasteners of two different thread sizes. The bolts are a circlip locking type. If I use these locking type , I may have to add a dab of silicone to each bolt head locking clip to prevent jingling.

Another dilemma for me is a retorquing after heat cycling.

Will I have access to retorque once everything is all buttoned up?

I didnt even open up the bolt kits that came with my headers. I reused all the factory stuff. new factory gaskets coated with copper coat. I tightened them all to as close to factory specs as possible, the ones i couldnt torque i tightened the best i could by hand(but i wrench for a living so im pretty close on how tight i can get stuff).. rechecked all the ones i could reach after 5 heat cycles not one bolt could be moved..

My only concern with reusing the OEM studs is that you are putting on a aftermarket, engineered product that came with fasteners that were designed to work with the Kooks. I understand trying to keep as much parts OEM but in this case, we removed the studs and used the Kook bolts. I did attempt to use some ARP locking bolts but they would not work for these Boss 302s and the Kook shorties.

And Harry, you're skinny enough to snake around and retighten the bolts.  B)

If you compare the OEM stuff vs the aftermarket . The OEM is way superior. Because studs apply the stress at the manifold/nut area vs all the stress at the head area. When you torque them, less chance of pulling threads out of the head. To each his own. But header leaks is not one of those things I like chasing. Ive reused the OEM studs on my last 4 mustangs and never a exhaust leak.

Hi GHIGBoss302:

Those are nice Dyno numbers, is it possible for you to post your Dyno run sheets? It would be nice to see the power & torque curves through the RPM range.

Thanks,

Hi GHIGBoss302:

Those are nice Dyno numbers, is it possible for you to post your Dyno run sheets? It would be nice to see the power & torque curves through the RPM range.

Thanks,
302 Hi Pro

This is on a DYNO dynamics dyno aka the heartbreaker dyno.. And she still did pretty good esp on a load bearing dyno.

Nice, it looks like she breaks 400 HP at or about 5,250 RPM's and heads north from there to 7,500 redline.

On the street, or track, this must make 3rd gear pretty exciting, I would think.

PS: Those are great numbers as the average U-Code engine pulls 378 RWHP, netting you an additional 55 HP, (Approximately).

Oh she pulls like a raped ape lol spinning the tires shifting from 2nd to  3rd at WOT is not a issue.. .. Actually redline has been moved to 7800 and she is still pulling at the rpm(so I can shift and still be in peak power). The power never tappers off .

Considering this is a load bearing dyno, im very happy with the numbers. A dyno jet puts out better numbers(447rwhp have to find the dyno sheet for that one but basically same curve) but this is closer to real world numbers. For the limited amount of mods and the power gain. Im ok with that.

This thread has me thinking about making the short trip over to Freehold, New Jersey to visit our friends at JDM Engineering. They can custom Dyno Tune my Boss U-Code to maximize my current set up.

Then make a trip over to ATCO, ATCO Dragway and see if Miss Kona can break-in to the elevens on street tires? That would be interesting. If I had traction, I suspect I'm close to 12.0 as is.

Our Boss U-Codes should be good to make power to 8,200 RPM's without worry of interference issues. She is a nicely built with
6-Bolt main caps.

Congrats on your success and have fun with your Boss 302.

OBTW, what are your plans for grip/traction?

I already have a complete UPR rear suspension setup(control arms with adjustable upper)  with relocation brackets. I have a set of ET drag radials mounted on Drag stars (15x8 rear 17x4.5 fronts) for the track.

Just to add.  http://www.mustangan...oto-gallery/#12

This is a article muscle mustang did on a bolt on boss a few years ago.. They installed long tubes with a xpipe (440rwhp 387rwtq) vs shorties with a hpipe  . besides a little more torque in the 3-4k range. The curves are pretty close. But for the headaches longtubes have with emissions (when needed),install and cost.im glad i went with the shorties.

Also not these runs were on a straight off the street car. No cool down except to put the car on the dynos.. This is what she makes in normal driving.

Called the dynojet guy and got him to send me a photo of my dynojet run.Not the best but its readable and not the best run, But im not gonna split hairs over difference 5rwhp dyno chart lol..

In reading your above post, I do have to set the record straight on my Kooks Super Street header install, I did find several OEM header flange studs did indeed have interference issues with the Kooks Super Street 1-7/8" primary tubes. I found stud interference with the primary tubes along the bottom of the flange. So rather than mix and match, I used the bolts as supplied by Kooks.

I think you are correct in your above statement: "Maybe on the early versions", as my first set of Kooks headers were manufactured incorrectly for a Boss 302 side pipe application resulting in a mis-alignment issue. Kooks Headers & Exhaust, Inc., (and their distributor, Maryland Speed Shop), did step-up with a replacement set of headers and even included the Silver Ceramic Coating as originally ordered. Koodos to Kooks & MSS.

However, I still had the same interference issue with my replacement header set.

With that said, I'm very happy that you did not have the same issue, and that other Members who go this route will have the option to use either the OEM studs, or the Kooks supplied hardware.

302 Hi Pro

PS: Happy to report no leaks after 19 months and 7K miles of operation.

20150716_010458_zpsj2cmgnbn.jpg

You can see one of the mounting bolts here that had stud to pipe interference.
