Hello all.

Past owner of several Mustangs, and future owner of a Boss.  I sat in a few other cars; nothing else felt as good.  I'm hooked.

There is a red 2012 Boss at a specialty dealer near me.  It had 28k miles, the limited slip rear end and looks to be in very good condition.  My concern is that the dealer only has the red key, which in my mind means that the car has seen a lot of red key driving time.  Should this be a point of concern?

I plan to drive this car to and from work and around town; probably 100 miles a week or so, and I am not looking for a show car for my garage.  I know this isn't the fastest version of Boss, but I'm pretty sure it will have more ability than I do.

Thank for your help.  I will post on the for sale board that I am interested if anyone here is ready to upgrade!  ;-)

Tom

The question begs as to whether the red key program has been activated? Otherwise it's just another key, I use mine all the time (switching out with the silver key every six months), but since the program never was activated it does do anything differently.

When the car is started the dash lights up:

TracKey Active

Track Use Only

I assumed that this meant the car had the TracKey System activated.  Am I correct?  Also, I assume I can get another Silver key right?  Any dealer?

Thanks.

It's possible that the other key has just been lost along the way after it got into dealer's hands. My car had the track key activated but only came with the silver key.

I haven't heard of any reliability issues caused by the red key anyway.

Thanks.

Do you get another message after several minutes that says TracKey Idle Enabled? I think the red key will display the first message whether it is activated or not. I'm not positive about that, though. You should see the idle enabled message if TracKey is working properly.

Yeah, the dealer will sell you another silver key.

I'll bet if you go and get another key cut from the red key. It will give you the normal driving mode. Because there is no chip in the replacement key. This way you will be back to having both keys. Cant hurt to try. Only thing you will lose is the cost of the key.

My understanding is that a key cannot just be cut. To work it has to be ordered from Ford by VIN number. It will then perform as the standard grey key. The cost was close to $300.

Holy Chit. $300

That's one expensive key. I guess you need the chip in the key no matter what tune you run.

So If you bring your mustang key to the locksmith they will only be able to cut you a new key that is OEM??

Better have your credit card with you.. :thud:

That wouldn't surprise me at all. Had a spare key cut for something, can't recall. Was to unlock the doors only (mechanical door lock). Hide a key- worked great for just that. So leave the start key under the mat and carry conventional key to unlock manually from now on. How it was always done for decades.

'13 GT Track Cal kit may be the answer for '13 Boss without track key. I just noticed it advailable as a clearance item at Levitown Ford parts department.
