I don't know how to read the small aluminum engine tag which is bolted next to the distributor. I would like to know what the letters and numbers mean. It reads: 302 C 70

                                                                                   ?-K     299 B

The Vin# is 0T02G121220

The plate that is mounted to the right front fender reads: 79 15 23K 63A BA

                                                                                           OT G121220 D Yellow

LP PB BO DE CL RS RM CT BL

I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Mark

According to VIN decoder you have a 1970 Boss 302.

The letters in your VIN verify this.

Do a search for Mustang VIN's & you will find this info.

That I know. I want to know what the engine tag numbers mean, and if it is the correct engine for the car.

The engine tag you are referring to can be decoded as follows:

302 - engine displacement
C - factory (Cleveland)
70 - model year
?-K - year & month of production (could it be a 9-K = November 1969?)
299 B - engine code. Correct code for a Boss 302

http://www.boss302.c...p?topic=72113.0

So it is the correct TAG for a 70 Boss 302 engine. But is it the correct engine? (many fake tags out there...)

To correctly ID your engine you also need the block casting number (hidden behind the starter). For a 70 Boss 302, it should read D0ZE-6015-B.
The block casting date is located not far and should be within a couple weeks to a month (prior) to the car build date.
Then to know if this particular engine is the one that was originally mounted to this car (matching engine), you'll find the VIN (or a portion of it with the last digits) stamped behind the block, on the driver's side.

The plate mounted to the right fender is your bucking tag. Lists all the car options. Some good info on this here:

Thank you. That's just what I needed. I'm getting the car ready for auction for a customer. It's a 36,000 mile unrestored car, and I just didn't want him to have any surprises. Virtually totally original. Exhaust, belts, wires, etc. Has the original almost unused rims. I think he will do well at Barrett Jackson in Jan.

I'm almost done with it. I'll put a few pictures up when I'm done. He is looking to sell the car, if anyone is interested. Very complete paperwork with the car as well. I wish I could afford it!

Very nice pics, thanks a lot!

As far as dates go, let me correct something I wrote above: Ford did not use "I" for month coding. They skipped it because it was used for "1", if I remember correctly.

http://fordclassics.com/date-codes

So, in addition to having a Boss 302 block casting number, you have:
9J12 on the block = casting on 12 September 1969
9-K on the tag = engine assembled in October 1969

Tag and engine are very likely matching. Now did you find the VIN stamped on the block? I bet it will be matching as well, which is very important for the value of that car.

I quickly decoded the buck tag, in case you haven't done it yet. Still a couple unknowns (?) so may be someone will chime in with a better knowledge.

79 - Shift number
15 - ?
23K - scheduled build date 23 October
63A - Sportsroof standard interior
BA - ?
0T G121220 - VIN
D - Dealer Order
Yellow
LP - Louvered Panel (?)
PB - Power Brakes
BO - Boss
DE - Dual Exhaust
CL - Convenience Lights
RS - Rear Spoiler
RM - Racing Mirrors
CT - Collapsible spare Tire
BL - Back Louvers (?)

Does the owner have the Marti report? It should confirm all this.

Yes on the Marti report. Is the VIN on the block visible, or does the bell housing need to be removed? Mark

On my 69, I can see it with the bell housing on. But it's a Dearborn car and there are notorious differences between assembly plants.

Some info here:

http://forums.vintag...s/600412?page=1

The VIN should also be on the tranny casing. Probably difficult to see while mounted on the car, though...

I'll try and find a pic of a Metuchen 70.

There you go:

http://www.boss302.c...p?topic=31372.0

I personally believe that on a car like this, if these are not accessible/readible while motor and tranny are mounted (flashlight/mirror), it is worth taking the tranny out to go find them. Especially if planning on selling. Matching driveline will drastically impact (increase) the value of the car.

Let us know what you find!

I looked on the machined flat part of the block, directly centered and behind the intake manifold. There are no numbers or lettering of any kind. I took a gray Scotch pad, and cleaned it a bit, and there is nothing. I looked on both sides of the rear of the block, and do not see any other machined areas to stamp a VIN. Is it by chance on the rear of the block, inside the bell housing? Much harder to find numbers on these Fords! Mark
