I am on the verge of purchasing my first mustang in 27 years. I have found a 2012 Boss 302 here where I live. I test drove it today but it has a shifting issue going I to 5th gear. After looking on the web and here I have come to find out there is a problem that's is unfortunately common with these car. My question is, is there a fix that will not cost a fortune?

This site is a little slow apparently these days. I’m new here and am realizing it. Be patient......there are a few very savvy BOSS guys here that will give you some amazing advice!

I’m a lifelong Mustang guy and have loads of experience with most...but my ‘12 BOSS is new to me too. So, unfortunately I can’t be of help. Keep checking back. Weekends are best, as the “regulars” seem to be here more frequently, then.

Good luck..... my first question would be how many miles on the car your looking at? Well....... or KM’s? LOL

Hi there, and welcome to this incredible forum. Shifting issues are extensively adressed in the "Clutch, shifter and transmission" section.

Plenty of good threads to read, like this one for instants:

http://www.boss302fo...ms-fixed/page-1

It seems that for most of us, the MGW shifter was the best mod we have done on our Bosses.

Enjoy your Boss 302!

Thank you. The car I am looking at and have pretty much done the deal has 18300 miles. After reading, all over the place, I really think it is a synchronizer issue. As long as it is fixed I will complete the deal. I am also already looking and doing some of the upgrades mentioned in the forums. Thank you again and I will keep this updated.

Yes, Likely a syncro issue, now.  The problem is likely brought on by a less than favorable stock clutch.  The stock clutch is heavy which puts a strain on the syncros.  The syncros fail and then you feel the trans is weak when in fact the root cause in the clutch.

To address your question.  No, there is no cheap solution.  A rebuild of the trans is likely in order as well as an upgrade to the clutch.  The Best rebuilder I have heard of is Calimer  Transmission.  I have tried to paste a link, did not work, google it.  He is a racer who figured out how to make the MT-82 work and last.  CAlimer offers a few different options from a mild street freshen up to full race.

Clutch.  A few options on that front.  I went with the McLeod RST with lightened flywheel.  There are others which guys have had good luck with.

I agree with TMSBOSS above.

My opinion only:  the stock clutch can't handle shifts above say 6500 rpms.  If you force it, you will damage the syncros.  If the syncros are already damaged, a better clutch (RST), will probably not solve your problem.  (I assume your problem shifting into 5th is not just at high rpms.)

Wrote a thread here or there and lost it I think, but anyways. Without all the interlocks and safety's can actually start a car in say 2nd gear and shift without using the clutch even. If syncros are good a matching speed of around 3K and the car will shift smoothly without clutching. Will grind of coarse or won't shuffle if syncros can't match lower to next level gear ratio.

Boss shouldn't be the exception if already rolling along, but haven't tried it in eons. In a past life actually had clutch linkage failures and drove car home as that (2 different cars). Road runner was way too heavy duty and Charger way too light.

Well too, completely concur with above info and as with any car if clutch doesn't even completely disengage at high RPM and shift is attempted, grind city is the last stop. 4th to 5th does seem to be the problem area though as 6th gear is overdrive (low RPM). Can you shift from 4th to 6th gear however, skip 5th?? https://www.caranddr...ithout-a-clutch https://en.m.wikiped...al_transmission

I'm not a Doctor. But you may be suffering from the Blue Oval disease. Please have your Blood checked right away. It should be blue in color.....

What I do suggest is that you need to drive that 07 Shelby. Any good women/car needs to be driven and show some love. A dusting off and a coat of wax is like a flower and a card. You need to take her out on the town and make her feel special.

I understand you want to keep mileage down. But 360 miles a year is a waste of bad ass machine and insurance. That is unless you have the cash flow to support that addiction.

On a serious note: The Boss is in a league of it's own and will hold it's value better than the Shelby.

Post some pictures of the Shelby when you take her out on the town and show her the love she wants. She needs to get out of the house!

O.... And remember to take the wife or girlfriend with you  . :shift:   :peelout:

Enjoy those cars how ever you feel the need. But... ENJOY!

Not sure which one will hold its value better but time will tell. Both models were only made for 2 years. Limited production #s also. We shall see.
Sure the boss will kick its ass. Both cars are fun in their own way. FYI I bought the 07 SGT this year with 3600 miles on her.
Check out BOSSBOYs cars. That is a fine collection. Even the vette 🤣

The SGT (good acronym) is a cool car. Looked at one with 800mi on OD. This had the Borlas and add on retro hood scoop. Not much more than a '07GT (non-supercharger) but think roughly additional $3K for Shelby package? Car was black and silver also, beautiful car. Decided no, what would I do with 2 cars I don't drive. It sold for $23-24K a few years ago.

The Boss will positively be the more valuable car at the finish line, but too in the eyes of the beholder?

Shelby GT class 101.....The 07/08 SGTs were sent to Shelby Automobile Inc. in Vegas directly from the ford factory. Shelby modified the cars like they did back in 1965. This was the first time Ford and Shelby got back together in over 40 years. The same concept as the Shelby GT 350 1965/1966/1967/1968 cars. To the purist this is the true Shelby. Carroll Shelby had his hands all over these SGTs.
See the MSRP window sticker from Shelby Automobile inc. Once a car was complete it was shipped to a Ford dealer. Two years only production in two colors. White or black.
Shelby also had a race team back in 1970 and had two Boss cars. Bud Moore had the better combination and won the championship for Ford with the Boss 302. Both Carroll Shelby and Parnelli Jones were some what involved in the 12/13 boss development. It all started back in 2009 as a secret six person skunkworks team within Ford. Most people probably know this but there is a guy on this forum ( bossmustang ) that was a member of that team ...how cool is that.

Sorry off topic and now back to the BOSS cars.
